Life Biography | Rapper & Producer Making Lo-Fi Hip Hop
Life is an English rapper and producer with lo-fi aeshtetics and galvanising lyrics, based in Reading, UK. A diamond in the rough: Life is a future landmark artist of the early 21st century.
Life evokes the high-soaring spirit of champagne-toting rappers and bears it through lyrics split with debauched realism.
Think of a modern day Lord Byron drenched in the cannon of 90’s New York rap and shared through the broken crack of English suburbia.
Inspired by the English landscape of 2-step Garage and Grime through which adolescence dragged him, Life has always been drawn to raw and open lyricism.
He’s a true craftsman, who finds inspiration in the depth of warm, vinyl samples, and those emcees who perfected their delivery over similar lo-fi Hip Hop.
Producing and writing all his own songs, Life remains a burning ember of creativity in an industry that has all but burned to pieces.
His name originates from the process of breathing new ‘Life’ into Hip Hop. Join him on his journey.
Kanye West. 2pac. Jay-Z. Wu-Tang Clan. Dave. Stormzy. 50 Cent. Eminen. Drake. Nas. Tyler, The Creator, Captain Murphy. Yeah, that’s the general picture.
“There’s obviously a limit to what I can put out there, but at this point, a lot of it is down to Mumsy owning the masters.” — Life
Life (pronounced Life) was born Sheffield, South Yorkshire, and cultivated an early interest in the drums. The musical instrument, not the band. By 2001 he’d moved to Reading and was embroiled in the burgeoning garage scene. By 15 he started to pursue a career in rap music.
Life had a turbulent childhood. He feels his music is a refelction of typical ‘mummy daddy problems’ and, true to his word, released ‘What’s Your Frequency?” in early 2010, in conjunction with local label Readipop.
The album gained little attention from the local hip hop scene. He performed at local Reading venues, including Play, and Pav’s. Life is currently gearing up for release of his sophmore effort, ‘Heir To The Throne’, due in late 2018.
What is Life’s take on Lo-Fi rap?
Rap should be warm and fuzzy, full of the hiss, crackle and pop of old vinyl recordings. Sampling and low-fidelity sounds with filtering, and ample use of low end should be elevated above all else.
Rap is poetry, the single most important driving force behind artistic endeour to explain and understand life.
